A crown is a false tooth placed on the prepared base of a damaged tooth or, in some cases, an implant. Crowns have many applications in dentistry—restorative, endodontic (root canals), implant—and they provide an exceptionally strong, durable, long-lasting method for changing and/or rebuilding your teeth. Traditionally, crowns have been made of gold or a metal base covered by a ceramic material shaped and shaded to complement adjacent teeth. Recent years, however, have seen the development of exceptionally strong, tooth-colored materials not requiring metallic bases. Responsible in part for the growing notion of “metal-free dentistry,” these all-ceramic materials enhance the natural-looking esthetics of crowns.
